7/8/2023 0 Comments David Boring by Daniel ClowesThat's the intriguing question explored by the cartoonist Daniel Clowes in The Death-Ray, the defining work of a 25-year career that has seen him mixing deadpan realism ( Ghost World, Wilson) with surreal, often grotesque fantasy ( David Boring, Like a Velvet Glove Cast in Iron). Given the opportunity to make that locker-room tormentor or Mean Girl disappear, with no consequences, would you have done it? After all, the extremity of emotions experienced by your average 17-year-old rivals the most passionate telenovela character. In fact, the only time in most of our lives that we have enemies to whom we wish to do actual harm - or who wish to harm us - is high school. Sure, that one guy might be a real jerk on Twitter. Sure, your next-door neighbor might refuse to trim dangling limbs from his oak tree. Who are your enemies? Do you even have any? Unlike superheroes, everyday people living everyday lives don't usually have nemeses. Your purchase helps support NPR programming. While Nomadland is not a true story, it is based on a 2017 non-fiction book of the same name by Jessica Bruder. When one considers Zhao will next be directing the upcoming Marvel’s Eternals, it makes her filmmaking techniques to create this viscerally authentic cinematic experience all the more unique. Many critics and early reviewers, including our review out of TIFF last September, responded to a more authentic representation of America than we tend to get in mainstream cinema. To further capture the feel of the nomadic experience, Zhao used a bare bones crew who traveled in vans and stayed in motels for the four-month production. Though Nomadland is not a true story or a documentary, the film often blurs the line between fiction and reality by centering real places and communities, as well as casting a number of real people who are playing fictionalized versions of themselves. The film stars Frances McDormand as Fern, an older woman and working class widow who travels the American west in a van, in which she also lives. Nomadland, the Oscar-tipped feature film from Chloé Zhao, debuted on Hulu Friday after getting a limited theatrical release in the U.S. He hears voices, especially the crying of his wife, and challenges the evil of the forest. Haven and her mother grew up as slaves in the house of Michael Antonelli until the day her mother convinced her to run away. It was a story of people trying to grow and move out of the shadows of their parents. This book was much more than a tale about child slavery. This wasn’t just Carmine and Haven’s story, this was Vincent & Mara’s story as well as a cautionary tale about “The Life”. It wasn’t just a story about two damaged kids falling in love, but about choices and responsibilities. I was apprehensive about the book when I saw the page count as well as the audiobook hours, but it flowed so well that I didn’t even notice the length. It was descriptive, concise, and paced evenly. I listened to this book and the narrator was fantastic. 7/7/2023 0 Comments The woman in cabin tenBut she still has to go on this week long luxury cruise assignment for work since her boss is on maternity leave. She got in a huge fight with her boyfriend. When a break-in occurs in her apartment with her present, it brings her fear and anxiety to a whole new high. Laura Blacklock (she goes by Lo) suffers from extreme anxiety to the point of needing medicine to keep it under control. I guess I'll delve into the plot a tiny bit to get my point across while still avoiding spoilers. It felt like the author just replaced a few facts with similar enough things.changed the train into a luxury cruise liner. Usually even with all the similarities of thrillers these days, I can find enough originality in the story to feel the author didn't *try* to follow the same formula. It also felt like a not as good carbon copy of The Girl on the Train. I found I was expected to suspend my disbelief even more in The Woman in Cabin 10 and I wasn't having any of it. I enjoyed Ruth Ware's debut a lot more than this one. 7/7/2023 0 Comments Dime store magicApril 17, 2023: After dropping Game 1 in lethargic fashion to the underdog Heat, the Bucks (+300) have ceded their position as favorite to the Celtics (+270), who routed the Hawks in their own Game 1.April 23, 2023: The Boston Celtics (+266) remain favorites, while the Phoenix Suns (+404) are creeping up on the Milwaukee Bucks (+358) for second-favorite.
7/6/2023 0 Comments Dawn of the dead george romeroIntent on making the remake a straight horror, Snyder took over to direct with the goal of keeping every aspect of the production as grounded in reality as possible. Rubinstein (who produced the original), and hired Gunn to write the script, which adopted the original's basic premise but is oriented around the action genre. Newman and Abraham bought the rights from co-producer Richard P. Producers Eric Newman and Marc Abraham developed the film rather as a "re-envisioning" of the original Dawn of the Dead, aiming to reinvigorate the zombie genre for modern audiences. Set in Milwaukee, the film follows a group of survivors who take refuge in an upscale suburban shopping mall during a zombie apocalypse. Scott Reiniger, Tom Savini, and Ken Foree from the original film also make cameo appearances. Romero's 1978 horror film of the same name, it stars an ensemble cast that includes Sarah Polley, Ving Rhames, Jake Weber, and Mekhi Phifer. Dawn of the Dead is a 2004 action horror film directed by Zack Snyder in his directorial debut, with a screenplay by James Gunn. The Maker, an evil and twisted Reed Richards, believes his former universe will make a grand return, forcing the Illuminati to reform to stop his plans, which involve another former Ultimate Universe denizen-Miles Morales. However, this new event will see the superheroes of Earth-616 clash with one of the few survivors of the Ultimate Universe once again. But this universe met its cataclysmic end in Jonathan Hickman's Secret Wars comic event in 2015. Launched over 20 years ago to attract new readers, the Ultimate Universe provided a fresh take on classic Marvel characters. In February, Marvel Comics announced a four-issue saga called Ultimate Invasion, headed by writer Jonathan Hickman and artist Bryan Hitch, who were the primary architects of the original Ultimate Universe. Marvel Comics is preparing for one multiversal invasion from a wayward universe. But it's fun to speculate nonetheless, especially when it involves the hot-button topic of the Multiverse. However, that doesn't mean everything that Marvel Comics does is indicative of Marvel Studios' plans for the MCU. Not only has it revisited previous comic events like Secret Invasion and Planet Hulk, but it's even included characters straight from the MCU, like Phil Coulson, Darcy Lewis, and even most recently May Calamawy's Layla El-Faouly. Marvel Comics announces a major upcoming comic book event called Ultimate Invasion, with a preview coming in the near future.įans of Marvel Comics have learned to accept its habit of integrating some synergy with the MCU. 7/6/2023 0 Comments Lupin the gentleman burglarIn the new "Lupin" series, the elusive burglar is shown laboriously creating his elaborate and ingenious disguises by using makeup and false facial features. "'That power of fascination which some men exercise on women is one of those mysteries which science should investigate before it does anything else,' said the Duke, in a reflective tone." (p. The plot is complicated, but not very suspenseful, there are too many servants and policemen, the Paris local color is lacking (although it is set in Paris), and the dialog is stilted. I read this book out of curiosity after watching the five available episodes of the new Netflix series "Lupin." Unfortunately, I don't think the original is as enjoyable as the reinterpretation, featuring a twenty-first century gentleman thief who models his exploits on the very popular original. In France, it remains as popular as the contemporary Sherlock Holmes stories in England, or as the slightly later novels by Agatha Christie, though now that I've read one, I understand why Arsène Lupin is not as popular in English-speaking countries as these stories. There are a huge number of editions of these books with a wide variety of covers, usually featuring Lupin with his gentlemanly top hat. Arsène Lupin: Gentleman Burglar by Maurice Leblanc is one of twenty four books about the fictitious criminal named Arsène Lupin, a series that began in 1905. |
